Neuromuscular treatment
The neuromuscular approach, for a client who has relevant symptoms is firstly to relax the head and neck musculature, then to stabilize the jaw in this new, muscularly-relaxed position, and finally to allow the teeth to function in this more stable and healthy position.
1. Muscle RelaxationThis is carried out via a process called TENS, which carries an ultra low frequency, rhythmic pulse to the strained muscles. This relaxes the muscle and jaw system.
2. Stabilization
Once the relaxed position is found, a plastic appliance called an orthotic, is worn to maintain the relaxed muscles, to allow healing, and to ensure that the original, painful symptoms have resolved.
3. Solutions Often, this orthotic is worn long term to maintain pain relief and improved joint function. Alternatively, the long term solution can involve coronoplasty, which is the meticulous adjustment of tooth shape, to allow the jaw to function in its muscularly relaxed position. Orthodontics or porcelain restorations can secure a healthy and great looking smile as an added benefit. See the educational links page for more information on neuromuscular dentistry.
